Workshop: Writing the Mother Knot

T-Yard Writers Residency is an initiative by designer and tailor T-Michael in collaboration with the contemporary art gallery Entrèe, and Tekstallianse – a network for the literary field in western Norway.

In October the artist in residence is Isabel Baboun Garib (Santiago, Chile 1984) actress and writer, currently residing in Santiago, Chile, where she teaches literature and a Screenwriting workshop.

For personal reasons we have decided together with Isabel to combine both activities (reading circle and workshop) in one. So there will be a writing workshop on Sunday at Tekstallmenningen from 13.00 to 15.00. Isabel will use fragments of the texts she was thinking for the reading circle as prompts to write.

In this workshop, we will delve into the mother-daughter relationship, searching for a dominant emotion within each participant that may influence this relationship. From there, we will begin our writing journey.

Theater offers us a space to explore the voice and the body simultaneously—on the stage. But what happens when we try to take this corporeal and scenic performance to paper? When we want to write with the ‘dramatic’ force of a character’s voice while remaining in the realm of writing, does writing then become the stage? Is it possible to subvert that order—the stage’s order? Beyond labels—fiction or non-fiction—for me, writing has been an attempt to unfurl the word as if it were a body, opening on a
stage that is none other than the paper, and from there, letting it run to the point of delirium.

The mother/daughter relationship has been the foundation and point of conflict in countless literary, theatrical and cinematic explorations. Some of the authors who have explored motherhood –from the point of view of a woman who wants to become a mother, or from the point of view of a daughter exploring the figure and influence of her mother– are Annie Ernaux, Jane Lazarre and Marguerite Yourcenar. We’ll use fragments of their texts to inspire our writing on Sunday (texts will be provided in advance)

(The activity will be conducted in English, but people attending can write in English or Spanish.)

There is limited space at the venue, so please send an email to kontakt@tekstallianse.org to register for the event, it will be first come, first served.

The event is a collaboration with T-YARD writers residency (Entrèe, T Michael and Tekstallianse) and Tekstallmenningen.
