A PRINTING PRESS OF ONE’S OWN
Ane Thon Knutsen

The research project A Printing Press of One’s Own resulted from Ane Thon Knutsen’s interest in the role and function of the printing press – a technology which played a key role in the expansion of the written word from the time of Gutenberg’s popularization of printing techniques around 1450 to well into the 20th century. Delving into the art of book printing against a backdrop of modern art forms, Ane Thon Knutsen adopted an experimental approach, and decided to perform a close study of Virginia Woolf’s authorship and her first hand experience as a typographer and small press publisher.

Ane Thon Knutsen is a freelance graphic designer and teaches at Oslo Academy of the Arts, as well as being head of communication at Fellesverkstedet in Oslo. In June 2019 she defended her Ph.D. thesis, A Printing Press of One’s Own.

ALTERNATIVE PUBLISHING AND RADICAL THINKING
Aleatorik

Aleatorik is a newly started small press based in Copenhagen, whose publishing practice revolves around the translation of radical political philosophy and furthering the awareness of the book as an object. The small press’ founders Gustav Hoder and Louise Bundgaard will be interviewed by Johannes Grytnes.

THE REAL POINT OF PUBLISHING
Forlaget Virkelig

Forlaget Virkelig is a small press based in Copenhagen, mainly publishing translated short form literary works. Presenting the small press, Andreas Vermehren Holm will talk about the opportunities and challenges of producing small format books.

De siste årene har vi kunnet lese mange bøker som befinner seg i krysningspunktet mellom skjønnlitteratur og sakprosa. Der flere hører hjemme i mellomsjangre som dokumentarromanen eller autofiksjonen, dyrker andre bøker fragmentariske, egenrådige former som gjør dem utfordrende å plassere i bås. Men ønsket de det, ville de vel aldri blitt til? I dette foredraget reflekterer forfatter, journalist, bibliotekar og forlegger Ane Nydal over hvorfor enkelte verk krever å utforme sine egne estetiske regler. Når skjer det ut av nødvendighet, og når er det mest en lek? Hva vinnes og hva tapes på å bryte med litterære konvensjoner? Og hvilke etiske problemstillinger oppstår av fiksjonens samkvem med fakta?

COMIC ARTIST’S BOOKS
Liam Cobb

Liam Cobb is a comic artist from London, working with alternative comics and small press publishing. The Fever Closing (2016), Conditioner (2017) and The Inspector (2018) were published by the UK based publisher Breakdown Press. All are printed on risograph.

Liam will be interviewed by Fredrik Rysjedal from Pamflett about his art, zines, small press publishing and risograph printing.

CHAPBOOKS FRA BERGEN
Tormod Haugland

Severina Sars Museum er et kunstnerkollektiv som utgir små hefter, såkalte chapbooks, med poesi og korte tekster om perifere og sentrale tema. Siden starten i 2011 har Annette Kierulf og Tormod Haugland utforsket denne formen og de sprekkene i det litterære landskapet de store forlagene etterlater seg. Tormod Haugland vil snakke om chapbooks fra et historisk og personlig perspektiv.

PHILOSOPHICAL FOUNDATIONS
Forlaget H//O//F

H//O//F is a part of the highly productive small press publishing constellation including House of Foundation and Audiatur. Since 2011 they have striven to let authors themselves decide on as much as possible of the production premises of their works, from the writing process to book formats. H//O//F publishes fiction, poetry, art books and philosophical works.
Eirik Høyer Leivestad will be interviewed by Audun Lindholm on H//O//F’s publishing practice, with special attention to their translations of continental philosophy.

INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORES
Cappelens Forslag and Bladr

Cappelens Forslag is an independent bookstore in the heart of Oslo, selling new and second hand editions of high quality literature, specialized in first editions, antique books, and cult literature.

Bladr (Danish for ’turn the page’) is a platform for the exploration, distribution and appreciation of artists’ books, which aims to increase the visibility of the field. Bladr is a bookstore and an exhibition place in Copenhagen, but also assumes various other shapes, organizing workshops, screenings, performances, book launches, talks and other events.

Pil Cappelen Smith from Cappelens Forslag and Sara Lubich from Bladr will share experiences and discuss the significance of independent bookstores.

ARTISTIC SYSTEMS AND PUBLISHING
Fukt Magazine and Ingrid Lønningdal

The latest issue in Fukt’s 20-year long history, issue number 18, explores the innate human desire to create systems. Many artists create their own systems, setting up rules for producing their art, sorting their materials, following specific schedules, creating new worlds. Such structures might provide us with a framework for stretching the possibilities of our creative freedom.

Lønningdal’s new book Ingrid Lønningdal – 10 is edited by Anne Szefer Karlsen, designed by Studio Geist and published by Teknisk Industri. The book presents works from the first 10 years of Lønningdal’s practice, in addition to seven newly written texts.

Bjørn Hegardt, artist and editor of Fukt Magazine, and Ingrid Lønningdal, artist, will discuss Fukt and Lønningdal’s contribution to the latest issue, as well as her new book.
